I hate to admit it and yet I’m a LITTLE excited for Facebook’s new currency project. I am frustrated that Facebook is leading it. I am hopeful that this can lead to a world currency. I am crossing my fingers and praying that it leads to more unity across the planet.

What I really wish would happen is that this spurs the governments of the world to realize that if they don’t create more unity at a government level, then businesses will do it. Much of the world has globalized, and yet governance has remained (mostly) capped at a national level. We have global communications, via phone and internet. We have global transportation, via planes and boats. We have global climate, whether you believe that climate change is happening or not (I’m confident it is), the climate still affects the whole planet. We have global business, companies that exist not just in one country but are operating in possibly over 100 countries around the globe. Yet, we still don’t have global governance.

The UN is a start, but, just like the Articles of Confederation in the early United States, it doesn’t seem to have enough authority to make the right changes. I see strong parallels in how the US went from the Articles to the Constitution, in reducing interstate conflict and adding a common currency, and what could happen on a global level nowadays.

I believe that if governments don’t address this issue, companies will, and I would prefer to have a government that deals with the rules of life rather than a company.
